Next Friday, February 15, 2019, Jesús Manuel Morón returns to Hostel ConCiencia, this time to talk about El Escorial as it is commonly known.

¨ The Monastery of El Escorial is the monument that best summarizes the ideological and cultural aspirations of the Spanish Golden Age, period in which the Crown of Spain, erected as the main defender of the Catholic Counter Reformation in front of the countries that had embraced the Protestant Reformation , was the first world power both for its dynastic alliances and the consequent territorial power in Europe, as for the dominance over the almost totality of the then known American continent.

The struggle of the “Catholic King” for European hegemony and for the defense of traditional religion, and the cult of the dynasty and the person of the Monarch as God’s chosen, find expression in El Escorial through an original synthesis of Italian artistic forms and flamencas.

With this conference we will discover how was the foundation of the space and what were its main reasons. To the architects of the project, details in its spectacular basilica and lavish library, works of immeasurable beauty such as the cenotaph of Philip II or the sepulchral group of Charles V, both of the great Leoni.

The pantheons, the crucified Christ of Benvenuto Cellini, the paintings of Lucas Jordán, the “Martirio de San Mauricio and the Theban legion” by El Greco, the “José’s tunic” by Velázquez, the “Annunciation” by Veronese or “Calvario” “by Van der Weyden, will be just some of the masterpieces with which to recreate during this conference.

A group that has it all and has been a World Heritage Site since 1984¨………..Jesús Manuel Morón Nadador
